Quality Control and Product Compliance in Fine Jewellery

This article is inspired by one of those sessions, led by an experienced Quality Consultant who spent several years working for a leading international luxury jewellery company. To preserve confidentiality, both the consultant and the company remain anonymous.

During the webinar, she explored the challenges of ensuring quality and compliance in an industry where excellence is non-negotiable.

More than craftsmanship: building quality from the start

Luxury jewellery is often admired for its design and craftsmanship, but behind every piece lies a rigorous quality process.

Quality does not begin with the final inspection, but it starts during product development. From selecting raw materials to validating suppliers and defining manufacturing processes, every stage is designed to prevent defects before they occur.

As the consultant explained, quality is about anticipating risks rather than simply correcting problems.

Balancing quality, compliance and traceability

Working with precious metals requires strict compliance with international regulations. Material composition, hallmarking requirements and chemical restrictions all need to be carefully controlled before products reach the market.

Traceability has also become a key priority. Every component, from gold alloys to gemstones, must be traceable throughout the entire supply chain. This allows manufacturers to demonstrate compliance, investigate issues quickly and meet growing expectations around responsible sourcing.

Today, customers expect not only exceptional products but also transparency regarding how and where they were made.

Working closely with suppliers

A large part of quality management happens outside the factory itself.

Suppliers play a crucial role in product quality, making audits, performance monitoring and continuous collaboration essential. Rather than simply assessing compliance, quality teams work alongside suppliers to improve processes and ensure consistent standards across the entire value chain.

This collaborative approach helps reduce risks while supporting long-term performance.

Quality as a driver of continuous improvement

Throughout production, inspections and testing help detect deviations as early as possible. When a non-conformity occurs, the objective is not only to solve the immediate issue but also to identify its root cause and prevent it from happening again.

Digital tools and data have also transformed the profession, allowing teams to monitor performance, strengthen traceability and make faster, more informed decisions.

A strategic role in luxury manufacturing

The seminar highlighted how the role of quality professionals has evolved. Beyond technical expertise, they must collaborate with engineering, production, procurement and regulatory teams while adapting to increasingly demanding standards.

In the luxury industry, quality is no longer just about inspection… it is a strategic function that protects brand reputation, ensures customer trust and supports operational excellence.
